Prisons Commissioner General V.R. de Silva has introduced a new badge
to the Prison Intelligence Unit to prevent mobile telephones and hard
drugs being used in the prison department premises.
The electronic and print media had given wide publicity that mobile
telephones and hard drugs were being used by inmates. Several steps were
taken including appointing senior prison officers to the Prisons
Intelligence Division with a new badge to prevent this situation, said
the Prisons Commissioner General.
According to the Prisons Commissioner General 70 overseers, 10 guards
and four jailors have been trained by the Police Special Task Force to
combat the situation inside the Prison Department.
This special unit will examine the parcels and food brought to the
prisoners by their relatives at the entrance to the Prison department.
This Special Unit will also visit prisons departments outside Colombo to
take action against drug peddlers and combat crimes, the Prisons
Commissioner General added. |
