Volleyball calendar opens with 'Munchee VB Championships'

The Volleyball Tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation along with National Youth Services Council for the Munchee Trophy will commence tomorrow at thirteen different venues in all parts of the country. The championship for men and women is sponsored by Ceylon Biscuits Limited.

The official opening ceremony is to be held at 9.30 a.m. at National School Courts in Mahiyangana under the patronage of President of SLVBF and Ports Development Minister Dilan Perera. The guests of honour will be CBL Director Nandana Wickramage.

The Division I contest which will be conducted on Electoral/Zonal basis while the second stage will be on Provincial Level and the final on national level. The Division I matches will continue till January 31.

The round two matches are scheduled to commence on February 13 and will come to an end on Feb 21.

The national level is due to be played February 27-28 while the mens Division I final stage will begin on February 22 and end on Feb. 26. The finals of both men and women is to be conducted at National Youth Services Centre Courts at Maharagama on March 13.

The winner and the three runners up in both categories are to Trophies and cash awards. There will be special cash awards for Best Spiker, Best Setter, Best Receiver and Best Blocker.

Sri Lnaka Railway won the Mens Championship last year beating Sri Lnaka Ports Authority in Division I while Womens Division I title was won by Sri Lanka Army winning over Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

In Division II Mens Championship Navy defeated Sri Lanka Army and in the womens category National Youth Services Council spikers overcame Kaduwela SC to be champions in this category.

The first round matches are to be played at the following venues.

Jaffna: Nadaraja Ramalingam MMV Courts.

Kantale: Public ground, Kantale.

Madampe: Senanayake MMV Courts.

Moneragala: Town Council Courts.

Mahiyangana: Girandurukotte ground.

Bandarawela; Public ground.

Uva Paranagama: Ambagasdowa ground.

Welimada: National school ground

Dambulla/Laggala: National school ground, Dambulla.

Hiniduma: Public ground, Mapalagama.

Elpitiya: Public ground.

Kalutara/Panadura: Pothupitiya MMV ground.

Avissawella: Chandra Sports Club Courts.
