Violent acts incited by opposition agents - Ven. Omalpe

The freedom from fear won by the supreme sacrifice of thousands of the Security Forces was being threatened by anti-national forces conspiring to take those valiant members of the Forces before international war crimes. This was a shameful activity that should be denounced by the people, Jatika Hela Urumaya General Secretary Ven Dr. Omalpe Sobhitha Thera said yesterday.

Addressing the UPFA press conference at the Mahaweli Centre, Colombo, he said if there were incidents of violence as reported in the news these acts were committed to discredit the government and the President by certain paid agents of the Opposition who had been placed among the UPFA supporters with nefarious intent.

“On the other hand, acts of violence perpetrated by the Opposition were intended to give an impression before the world that the democratic election process in the country was fraught with violence. We caution those engaged in such acts to stop it as the country had experienced enough violence with the terrorists,” Ven. Sobhitha Thera said.

Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said the abolition of the Executive Presidency was a piecemeal proposal as the whole electoral and legislature system had to be changed.

The electoral system with the preference voting system abolished and Jana Sabha at the village level started in its place to allow people to determine their own affairs, like in the Gam Sabha system. The legislation to make these changes would be brought before parliament shortly. Answering a query Western Provincial Council Minister Udaya Gammanpila said anyone who resorts to violence even from within the UPFA ranks is also carrying out a contract of the Opposition. Those who resort to such acts were definitely working for the Opposition

The opposition believing that the Tamil National Alliance has a voter base of 130,000 votes in the north had agreed to betray the country but the people of the north do not back the TNA as they were aware about the services rendered to the people of the north by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The people of the North would support President Rajapaksa as they cannot be deceived by the opportunistic politicians in the Opposition, he also said.
