Progress in the Educational Field
3,929,234 students receive education from
212,683 teachers in 9662 schools in Sri Lanka.
The present government has unambiguously
realized the responsibility of producing a young generation armed
with latest technological knowledge and who would be dutiful and
productive citizens to the country. Accordingly, many dynamic
changes were introduced in the educational field during the last
four years. All vacancies have been filled and promotions have been
made in the Educational Administrative Service and
the Sri Lanka Principal Service. 281
officers were recruited for Teacher Educational Service.
2474 officers were recruited anew for Sri
Lanka Principal Service.
Teachers Service and Graduates
12000 National Teaching Faculty Services appointments were given
during the past four years. In addition, 33,000 graduates were
recruited as Teachers. 3275 Tamil Medium Teachers were recruited for
service in the Estate Schools.
Teacher Training

All teachers in the schools have been provided training and 2750
teachers were recruited and trained for service in the Teacher
Training Colleges.
A new faculty was started for Information Technology. Peradeniya
Teacher Training College was developed as an English Language
Faculty.
The monthly allowance paid to those who received in training in
Educational Faculties was doubled.
Distribution of School Text Books
All delays related to this subject have been nullified and in the
year 2009 alone Rs.3000 Billion was spent for printing text books.
School Uniforms
Expenditure of School Uniforms in the year 2010 amounts to
Rs.1260 million.
Full-fledged Schools

One school in each Divisional Secretariat was selected and
developed to equip with all facilities. The expenditure amounted to
Rs.2570 Billion.
School Children from the North
For provision of school uniforms to 60,600 children in the
Internally Displaced Camps an amount of Rs.45 million was spent.
Action has been taken to teach Tamil language to all Sinhala
teachers and teach Sinhala language to all Tamil teachers.
Mid Day Meals
In the year 2008 alone Rs.1648 million was spent for providing
mid day meals to 575,896 students in 6025 schools.
School Facilities
Rs.1780 million has been spent for provision of multi lingual
facilities, health care facilities, water and electricity supplies
and other amenities to 2276 schools.
Estate Schools
Rs.260 Billion was spent for development of Estate Schools in the
year 2009. 3250 centres for development of information technology
education and 45 e-villages have been established. Steps were taken
to provide information technology educational facilities with
Chinese assistance.
School Libraries
Rs.50 million has been spent for development of school libraries.
Sports Development
1840 selected schools were provided with sports gear and
facilities for development of sports.
Examination Efficiency
60% of the Advanced Level students became qualified to enter
Universities in the year 2006.
This efficiency level has been raised to 63% in the year 2009.
48.7% of Ordinary Level became qualified to receive education in
Advanced Level in 2006.
This has been raised to 56.8% in the year 2009.
