The cream of the Sri Lanka women’s cricketers will be in action when
Marians Ladies CC confront Kurunegala Youth Ladies in the SLC Women’s
Premier limited overs cricket tournament final at the CCC grounds in
Maitland Crescent today. Kurunegala Youth CC Ladies will have the
services of seven national caps and several other former national
players who have been in the business for quite some time.
Despite having taken up the game two years ago Kurunegala Youth CC
have performed extremely well to reach the final in a short period of
time after they emerged runners up in the ‘B’ division tournament. Even
then Marians Ladies CC will start as the favourites to clinch the title
after their crushing 40 run victory against the same opponents earlier
in a preliminary round fixture. On that occasion Marians Ladies were
dismissed for 180 runs from 49.4 overs but hit back strongly to reduce
their opponents to 140 for 9 from their 50 overs.
They went on to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament with six
convincing victories against Moratuwa SC, Parlink SC, Colts CC,
Kurunegala YCC, Lanka Women’s CC and Southern Ladies CC respectively.
They also made a clean sweep at the recent CEAT awards ceremony where
skipper Sweeni de Alwis, Dedunu de Silva and Sashikala Siriwardena were
selected as the Best Bowler, Best Batswoman and Best All rounder
respectively. Marians Ladies also had the distinction of piling up over
400 runs in the match against Moratuwa SC with Dedunu de Silva and
Sweeni de Alwis notching up centuries.
