Gen (Rtd) Fonseka wants LTTE to fund his election campaign
Commits blunders and contradicts himself:
Political novice, Gen (Rtd) Sarath Fonseka making his debut in
politics yesterday morning to announce his candidature for the upcoming
presidential election, before the local and international media
contradicted the policies of the partners in the opposition alliance
sending cross currants among the newly formed alliance, brokered by UNP
leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and SLFP discard, Mangala Samaraweera, the
Government Information Department website news.lk said.
The retired General who admitted that he had no knowledge of the
nation’s economy and its’ operation, confessed that he had accepted the
open economic policy mooted by the UNP decades ago, and would follow it
upon being elected to the Office of President. Little he knew that his
alliance partner, the JVP was a party fully opposed to the open economic
policy of the UNP. Political analysts now raise questions whether the
JVP would accept such policy of Fonseka which would affect the local
industries, slash public sector employment, encourage privatization and
also resort to unscrupulous methods of increasing fuel prices.
In another blunder, the General said that the people should be free to
consume liquor for mental satisfaction as they wished. Intellects
question whether the General, planning to be a President ,wants to turn
this society into a state of drunkenness where human morals would be
buried.
The worst ever confession by the General was that, he (Fonseka) would
even accept funds from slain LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabakaran’s
parents and other LTTE supporters to carry out his election campaign.
This statement of the General was met with annoyance by the public who
said that the General looked to be a part of the LTTE’s overseas
conspiracy to destabilize the country. General Fonseka referring to the
abolition of the executive presidency, stressed upon the two thirds
majority in Parliament to execute that task in ‘practical indefinite
period of time’.
This is analyzed by constitutional experts as an impossible mission
where the General would never be able to meet or fulfil.”This looks to
be an attempt only to grab power and a slogan to reach the masses as
done by the JVP and the UNP,” observed an Expert on Constitutional
affairs.
All Heads of State in the past too sincerely attempted on that move,
but ended unsuccessful as the two thirds majority looked a hurdle under
the present constitution.Political analysts said that Fonseka must first
try to win the poll before dreaming of impossible distant dreams.
As the belief the tongue speaks the truth than the mouth, General
Fonseka admitted having made many mistakes in the war front during his
stewardship in the military.
At one point when journalists began to flood him with questions, the
General evaded saying he was not politically experienced to answer many
of them and urged the media to restrict the number of questions. |
