A Sinhala search engine called Sasrutha (www.sasrutha.com) has been
developed to address the local needs in the Internet by a past graduate
at the Science Faculty of the Colombo University.
This web performs the functions of any other search engine like Yahoo
or Google, while facilitating to use the Sinhala font for Sinhala
search.
"Sasrutha is the only Sinhala search engine in the world as far as we
are aware. By using it, one can easily surf the Internet for all the
Sinhala webs available for a selected topic," web developer Mahen
Mudalige told the Daily News.
"Sasrutha is said to have the access to 12 billion web pages and will
be of much use for undergraduates, students and scholars to look up for
knowledge and information in the Sinhala medium.
"It is often claimed that, though a vast knowledge is stored in
English on the Internet, one can hardly find any valuable information in
Sinhala for education purposes.
"Contrary to that, Sasrutha will show the great storage capacity in
Sinhala in the internet," he noted. |
