Schol benefits for Eagle's ninth batch of highfliers

Eagle Insurance will present Higher Education Scholarship benefit certificates to 25 students from all districts in the country on Monday, November 30 these 'Highfliers' have proved their academic excellence by topping the batch in each district at the Government Year 5 Scholarship Examination held in 2002. They have entered Advanced Level class this year and are now entitled to receive the scholarship benefits.

"This is another demonstration of how we at Eagle are dedicated to delivering our promises" said Managing Director Deepal Sooriyaarachchi recalling that this was a promise that the Company has made to the 'Year 5 Highfliers' 7 years ago.

"Our prime objective as a responsible corporate citizen is to encourage and recognize Sri Lanka's future leaders who have shown great promise at such a young age. We take pride in helping to mould them into qualified citizens who will make the nation's future better and brighter", he said.

Eagle initiated the Higher Education Scholarship as far back as in 1994 and this year the ninth batch of highfliers will be benefited from this award. The Eagle Higher Education Scholarship is unique because Eagle is the only insurer in Sri Lanka to unconditionally recognize academic excellence on merit alone. Parents of the students who qualify are not required to be Eagle policyholders.

Another unique feature of this awards ceremony is the recognition of the contribution made by the teachers and principals in nurturing excellence. Certificates of appreciation will be presented to the Grade 5 class teacher and school principal of each of the students. This is a rare occasion where their dedication will be acknowledged.

The scholarship awards students with Rs. 1,000 a month from the time they enter the Advanced Level right up to the completion of their university education, which amounts to Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 84,000 per student depending on the duration of the degree course they choose. Those who opt not to enter university receive a lump sum of Rs. 25,000.

The number of scholarships offered has now grown to 375 and with this batch, there would be 200 students benefiting from the award scheme. The fund of Rs. 10 million initially set aside for the continuation of the scholarship has increased to Rs. 48.6 million through prudent investment.
