AIS International Schools Tennis Champions

The ongoing rivalry between the two schools - AIS and CIS much like the Royal-Thomian was once again encountered at the finals of the International Schools Tennis Championships held at the SLTA courts on 24 and 25 October 2009.

The championship was organized by the Asian International School. Each of the six schools in the championship had to field teams to play in 3 singles and 2 doubles for the boys and 2 singles and 1 doubles for the girls.

In the league matches boys - AIS beat Gateway 5/0.

In Group B-CIS beat Lyceum Nugegoda 3/2. Lyceum Nugegoda beat Stafford 5/0 and CIS beat Stafford 3/0.

In the semi-finals CIS beat Gateway 3/0 and AIS beat Lyceum 3/0. In an exciting final AIS beat CIS 3/1 to emerge winners in the boys category.

Eshan Jeyamanne (AIS) beat Nikolai (CIS) 9/0, Nicholas Fairbanks (CIS) beat Sawin Jayasekara (AIS) 9/4 and Thaqib Nazar (AIS) beat Athavan Pushparaj (CIS) 9/2.

AIS doubles pair Bhagya Goonewardhane/Burhanudin Thassim beat Joshua Jayaratne/Viranka Fernando (CIS) 9/2.

Girls CIS beat Stafford 3/0 to reach the final. AIS beat Stafford 3/0 to reach the final. Once again in a very exciting final the AIS girls proved themselves superior by beating Colombo International School 2/0. Rishmitha Sivakanthan (AIS) beat Niroshini Gajendran (CIS) 9/4. Nilupul Gunasekara (AIS) beat Dushinka De Silva (CIS) 9/0.

Eshan Jeyamanne of Asian International School and Nilupul Gunasekara also of Asian International School were adjudged as the Best Players of the tournament. Ishara Seneviratne the tournament umpire gave away the awards.

Boys Champions: Asian International School.

Girls Champions - Asian International School.
