Ammunition recovered

A large cache of ammunition including high velocity C-4 plastic explosives, SFG hand grenades and mortar shells was recovered inside a pit located behind a tsunami housing scheme in Vakarai, yesterday .

Police said the explosives were found buried underground in the woods behind the Fifth Lane of Vakarai “Houses 50 tsunami village” .

A team of police personnel from Vakarai Vidyalaya Police Post, led by OIC SI B.C.K. Mataraarachchi have seized the explosives haul following a tip off received on Sunday.

Among the explosives were, eleven mortar shells (HE 82) , 33 mortar caps, 450 T 56 cartridges, two SFG hand grenades, one kilogram C-4 explosives and one RPG shell.

The weapons had been taken into custody from the Kiran area of Valachchenai in a raid, which was conducted by Batticaloa Special Operations Unit under the supervision of SI Ruberu.
