Leo Club of Wattala City becomes host to IDPsTo celebrate 1st
quarter

It turned to be a unique feature when members of the Leo Club of
Wattala City crossed the final frontier to go to places where no Leo has
gone before.
Accompanied by Leo Advisor Lion Dr. Maithri Perera who always cared
for the internally displaced, members of the Leo Club of Wattala City
led by President, Mithraka Perera visited the IDPs in the camps of
Vavuniya.

This is one of the landmark projects of District Governor, 306B1 Lion
Lakshman Wijesinghe’s program, Lion Dr. Maithri said.
The team of Leos, together with DG Lion Lakshman Wijesinghe, Leo
Advisor, Lion Dr. Maithri Perera and Leo President, Mithraka Perera,
donated six sewing machines, 600 sarees, 800 sarons, sanitary items,
plastic utensils and 600 mats. The visit was planned to celebrate the
club’s first quarter in office. Collection of funds for the these
donations to the IDPs at Vavuniya was the hard work of President, Leo
Mithraka Perera. Leo Roshini (Coordinator IDPs) Leo Manisha, Leo Hiran
and Leo Nigel. It was a landmark project of the Leo Club of Wattala City
whose members are below 18 years of age.
Leo Club of Wattala City was the brainchild of District Governor,
306B1. Lion Lakshman Wijesinghe and Cabinet Secretary Lion Dr. Seba
Jayamaha. This new concept of ‘Quality Leoism’ was implemented through
the guiding hand of Zone Chairperson, Lion Diresh Perera and Lion Lalith
de Soysa, and natured with the tender hands of Leo Advisor, Lion Dr.
Maithri Perera who toiled to bring out a fully blossomed quality Leo
Club.
From its spectacular inauguration, the Leo Club of Wattala City was
outstanding. This club was the first Leo Club to be installed in the
fiscal year 2009/2010 on the eve of the installation of Lions Cabinet
officers.
Its first project was a fundraiser at the annual sports day of the
district. This brought in substantial revenue to lay its foundation on
solid ground. Though tender in age Leo President.
Mithraka and his fellow Leos worked hand in hand with Lions to go to
Batticaloa to carry out service projects. On August 28, Leos Mithraka,
Tyron, Sudahir and Lawrence were in Batticaloa Osanam Home for children
to distribute dry rations, medicine and clothes. On August 30, they
conducted a cricket tournament for under 19 and 12.
Two trophies,six challenge cups and cash prizes were presented to the
children of Thiruperumathura, four km from Batticaloa. Sight
conservation and restoration at Navathakadu, 15 km from Batticaloa was
the final destination to screen over 200 people and donate 200
celebrated spectacles.
Leo President, Mithraka and Lawrence who are Students of Colombo
International School, organized a Multiple Service Project at the Home
of Compassion on August 31 with Leo Loshini of Asian International
School and Sudeera and Chinthaka of St. Joseph’s College.
Lectures on Diabetic awareness and screening was followed by a
lecture on cancer awareness and prevention by Dr. Lion Maithri Perera.
Screening for diabetes and sight screening by Lion Lady Dr. Sulari was a
roaring success. This multi service project too was a roaring success.
It was conducted by offering lunch to all inmates of the home. Thirteen
inmates received calibrated spectacles on September 27.
Lions Competitions for Colombo District ‘Dahampasal’ students
Lions Club of Colombo Mid City and the Lasantha Goonewardena
Foundation are jointly organizing the Essay/Debating/Oratorical and Poem
Competition for “Dahampasal” students in Colombo District. The main
objective of this project was to encourage students to go to the Sunday
Schools and build up their life’s with the religious background. With
many harmful things happening around the children it is utmost important
to bring the children to the temple or other religious centers.
The theme of the competition is to “Make a Man to Build the Country”.
In parallel to the competition there will be a program to recognize the
Sunday School teachers who have completed the service of 10 years.
Age Limits:
1. Essay/Poem & Debating Competitions: Junior for Grade 08/09 and 10
students, Senior for Grade 11/12 and 13 students (All essays should be
less than 1000 words), All poems should be in one A4 sheet. 2. Debating
Competition: Senior for Grade 11/12 and 13 students, Make a man to build
the country.
Rules and Regulations:
Essay and Poem Competitions:
1. A child can submit only one item from each category. 2. All
submissions should be certified by the Class Teacher and the Principal
of the Sunday School. 3. All essays and poems should be sole product of
a student and it should not be submitted for any other local or foreign
competition. 4. The essays and poems will not send back to the students.
5. Please write “Make a Man to Build the Country” in the top left hand
corner of the envelop.
Oratorical and Debating Competition:
1. One Sunday School can send only one team for the debating
competition and one student for the oratorical competition. 2. The dates
of the competitions will be notified later.

November 15, 2009 as per the details given below:

TMC Wisdom 2009 Quiz
As speculated, it turned out to be another close battle for top
honours at The Management Club’s (TMC) Wisdom 2009 - the ultimate quiz
challenge - and it was a talented team of quizzers from Seylan Bank led
by Brian Joseph that emerged victorious edging out Mahesha Weerasinghe’s
team into the second slot aftertwo tie breaker rounds.

They were followed by three other teams formed by groups of
individuals - led by Indika Jayasinghe, Rasitha Chandradasa and Lathike
Niriella respectively. The Wisdom Quiz, held on Saturday 19th September
at the Galle Face Hotel, was yet again conducted by Ruwan Senanayaka, a
founder member and official Quiz Master of TMC, whose mission is to make
Sri Lanka the most sought after venue for International Quizzes.
Dialog Telekom emerged the top team in the Mercantile sector while
the schools category was won by Royal College “A” team, Seylan being the
top among the Bank teams and Mahesha Weerasinha’s the best in teams
formed by individuals.
The Royal “A” team bagged the top slot in the Schools and Educational
Institutions category having competed with leading schools such as
Ananda, Nalanda, Royal, St. Thomas, St. Joseph’s, D.S. Senanayake, Ave
Maria, Richmond and Wycherley International as well as teams from the
Colombo Medical Faculty and Achievers Business School.
It was noteworthy that schools from as far as Negombo and Galle were
part of this year’s quiz and all participating teams from the
Educational sector were presented with Book Vouchers worth Rs. 2,500
each with the compliments of Pan Asia Bank - a new feature, this time in
the Wisdom Quiz.
Dialog Telekom had to overcome a tie with Amba Research to win the
Mercantile Sector category having competed with teams from Aitken
Spence, Interblocks, DHL, GlaxoSmithkline and Suntel in the first 5
rounds.
Seylan Bank team also won the category award for Banks and Financial
Institutions beating teams from Commercial Bank, Kandy and Colombo, Pan
Asia Bank and two teams from People’s Bank.
Completing the line up of 33 teams were 7 teams formed by groups of
individuals and it was evident that they made the contest that much more
competitive as four of these teams bagged the five top slots in the Quiz
while Mahesha Weerasingha’s team emerged the best.
Every contestant was presented with a certificate of participation, a
unique feature in TMC’s Wisdom series, and trophies and certificates of
excellence were awarded to the top two teams and the 04 sector winners.
TMC’s Wisdom Quiz event is much looked forward to in the Quiz arena
in Sri Lanka, and a TMC spokesperson indicates that the feedback from
participants after the conclusion of wisdom 2009 confirms that it will
remain so far many more years to come.

The Lions Club of Colombo West Celebrated International Children’s
Day at Little Heart Nursery, Barnes Place Colombo 7. It was organised by
the President, Lions Club of Colombo West, Lion Ashraff Hussain.
The little ones were treated to breakfast and milk foods.
The club also donated text books to the nursery.
Lions Club of Mabole second charter celebrations
The second charter anniversary and District Governor’s official visit
to the Lions Club of Mabole was held at Hotel Clarion, Kiribathgoda.
