ISMM anniversary

Purchasing and Materials Management (P and MM) is a fast developing field of management and has major influence on economic development and trade both at domestic and international levels said Institute of Supply and Materials Management (ISMM) Chairman K.M.D.J. Chandima Jayatillake.

He was speaking at the 37th anniversary of ISMM which was held in Colombo last week.

"The impact of P and MM will be felt in all activities and no institution could carry on with its activities devoid of material resources. As a result the role of P and MM is assuming a strategic one for the progressive development of the country", he said. Supply chain management has been accepted in the country and people value it. Now it's in the developing stage in the country, he said.

The Cargills Supermarket Chain is at present successfully implementing the supply chain management function because it enables them to improve their overall competencies, in the same way, it helps them to reduce the cost of operation and increase the profit, he said. "This year we celebrate our 37th anniversary in collaboration with the Indian institute of Material Management. ISMM's main purpose is to be the premier professional institution in Sri Lanka in the field of Logistics, Supply Chain Management," he said.

"Training is one of the major objectives of our institute. Since 1972, the institute started a course in Storekeeping in both Sinhala and English mediums. The demand for the Institute's course is steadily increasing. The institute regularly holds seminars and workshops to familiarize members with the latest developments in techniques, skills and concepts to update their knowledge and upgrade their performance," he said.
