Myth disproved - SLFP General Secretary
Shirley WIJESINGHE
The 1978 Constitution was brought with the myth that the SLFP would
never come to power and no party would obtain a two thirds majority.
That myth has now been disproved, SLFP General Secretary and Agriculture
Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithripala Sirisena said. He
added that the SLFP led UPFA proved this by winning four Provincial
Councils with a two thirds majority.
He was addressing the fourth Annual General Meeting of the Sri Lanka
Independent Professionals' Organization held at the Mahaweli Centre
yesterday.
Minister Sirisena said President Mahinda Rajapaksa's name will be
added to Sri Lankan history as the leader of the SLFP and governing
political party who successfully met numerous local and international
challenges that were in favour of Prabhakaran and the LTTE. "A peaceful
atmosphere for people has dawned today with signs of a prosperous future
under the present Government. We should be ready to devote our life
totally for the future generation," he said.
Sirisena said the previous leaders of the UNP had made remarkable
contributions to the country. The development missions done by such
leaders should be appreciated. But the present UNP leader is completely
a different character. He cannot understand the thinking of the nation
and their culture. The national development agenda towards a developed
country has already been prepared by the Government under the direction
of President Rajapaksa, he said.
He also thanked the Sri Lanka Independent Professionals Organization
for giving their fullest support to the SLFP to provide a real political
leadership. |
