Study to deal with job loss

The Government yesterday said that a study is in progress with the participation of the International Labour Organization to establish an unemployment Benefit Insurance Scheme for the future development of persons who lost their employment due to the impact of the world Economic crisis.

It was also revealed that arrangements have been made to implement a program to find re-employment to those who lost employment, after registering with the Sri Lanka JobsNet.

This was revealed in a document tabled in Parliament in response to a question raised by UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella. According to a survey carried out by the Labour Department, a total of 29,159 jobs have been lost during the first quarter of 2009 in Sri Lanka due to the effects of the global economic recession.
