He stressed the importance of a long-term plan which includes
continuous training for the junior and senior categories with the
fullest support from the Ministry of Sports.
Sri Lanka have already produced an international level bodybuilder in
Prasanna Peiris who will compete in the bantam weight category at the up
coming World championships in Doha Qatar from November 1 to 5.
Prasanna Peiris was attached to the Sri Lanka Navy and he is
currently representing the Dehiwela-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council
team. Kapila Kumara also stated that Sri Lanka need to improve the
conditions at the bodybuilding centres with modern equipment.
Sri Lanka should also look to promoting the sport in the rural areas
by providing them with the required nourishments. To achieve this target
the competitors will need to look for sponsors who are keen in helping
the sportsmen.
Kapila Kumara said that there was a five year plan implemented during
his term from 2002 to 2004 and 2006. He stated that bodybuilding is a
performing art and can be developed into international level.
Kumara who was a national advisor for the sport also noted that there
were a total of 126 clubs actively involved in the sport. He was the
Vice President of the South Asian Bodybuilding Federation from 2002 to
2007.
Kumara was named as the most muscular bodybuilder in 1989 and is
presently working as the Department Head of Sports in the Dehiwela Mount
Lavinia Municipal Council. |
