PM invites investment from Jilin Province for N-E

Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka who is on an official visit to Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province, China, invited investment from Jilin Province to be established in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country.

The Prime Minister called on Communist Party of China Secretary Wang Min and Jilin Province Governor Han Changfu on October 17.

Strengthening ties

Warmly welcoming Prime Minister Wickramanayaka and the delegation and briefly introducing Jilin province, the CPC Secretary expressed interest in further strengthening the bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas of agriculture, manufacturing of motor vehicles and education with Sri Lanka.

Explaining that Sri Lanka's economy is based mainly on agriculture, Prime Minister Wickramanayake invited investment from Jilin province to be established in the Northern and Eastern parts of the country. Elaborating on the recent victory over terrorism and clearing of land in the North and the East, the Prime Minister said that it is the Government's intention under the massive development drive, to cultivate every inch of arable land in those areas to improve the people's standard of living.

The Prime Minister also discussed with the CPC Secretary and the Governor on the possibilities of improving people to people contacts between Sri Lanka and Jilin province, mainly by way of student exchange programs and projects designed for technology transfer.

During the stay in Jilin Province, Prime Minister Wickramanayaka also visited the Agriculture University of Jilin Province and discussed with the President and other officials of the University on possibilities of opening new avenues for Sri Lankan students to gain expertise in latest technology in fields such as agriculture, horticulture and food processing available in the institution.

The Prime Minister also held a meeting with Changchun city Executive Mayor Sui Zhongcheng where the two leaders exchanged views on further economic and investment cooperation between Sri Lanka and China. Prime Minister Wickramanayaka was accompanied by Sri Lanka's Ambassador to China Karunatilaka Amunugama and other senior officials.
