Westwood ends two-year title with Portugal Masters win
England's Ryder Cup star Lee Westwood shot a six under par final
round 66 to win the Portugal Masters on Sunday, claiming his first
European Tour title for over two years.
Westwood, the world number 11, finished 23 under for the tournament,
two ahead of Italy's Francesco Molinari.
Triple Major winner Padraig Harrington was third on 19 under
following a 67, while overnight leader Retief Goosen of South Africa
slumped with a 75.
It was 36-year-old Westwood's first win since his British Masters
triumph in 2007 and also sent him to the top of The Race to Dubai
standings.
Westwood, who has had 26 top-10 finishes since his last win, is
seeking to be crowned European Number One for the second time in his
career.
Westwood, who pulled off a birdie at the long 17th when one clear,
said: "It was nice to finish it off, you never know when the next win is
going to come and you start to question yourself.
"You always slightly doubt yourself in the back of your mind and to
be number one again feels great. It's been nearly 10 years since I won
it. "I'm also delighted about the world rankings. I always have a good
look at that and it's a reflection of my consistency.
"But winning is definitely a habit and I got out of the habit.
Hopefully now I have won again I can win more."
Molinari was level with Westwood until he missed a three-foot par
putt on the short 16th.
On the 17th Westwood went long and left.
"All I could see was trees (right in front of him) and water (over
the green) - and I had a really tight lie," he recalled after taking a
free drop. VILAMOURA, Portugal, Monday, AFP |
