Arming the future with development
A leader should have a clear understanding of the
hopes and aspirations of his people. A foremost desire of the people
is to uplift the social, moral and cultural values of the future
generation. While being sensitive to short term problems of the
people he should ensure the long term development and welfare of the
nation without sacrificing it for short term gains. A leader should
always think of his responsibilities towards the future generation.

Reflections on ‘resignation’
Younis Khan, the captain of the Pakistan cricket
team, has resigned, in disgust, we are told. The resignation came
after Younis was summoned by a Parliamentary sports committee
inquiring into charges of match-fixing in the recently concluded
Champions Trophy in South Africa. The Pakistani captain is reported
to have told the committee that he was upset over the charges. ‘I
cannot take this,’ he had told them. In other words, he basically
told the committee ‘you can take my captaincy and stuff it wherever
you wish’.

Finally we are free !
On September 23, when I visited the office of
the United Nations Secretary General to hand over a copy of our new
sustainable development plan - Green Lanka - I was received by its
under Secretary General No.2 in New York, Shurkan - Head of
Sustainable Development and Economic Affairs Division. Having
welcomed me, his opening remarks were “Sri Lanka was the only
country which fought global terrorism successfully after the Super
Powers declared war on terror after 9-11-2001”.
