Lankan dies in Dubai road accident

Five people including an Emirati teacher and a Sri Lankan youth were killed in road accidents during the weekend in Sharjah.

Henian Al Hammadi, a teacher at Al Zawra School in Ajman died while her four-year-old daughter and a Sharjah Municipality worker sustained injuries in an accident which took place on the Al Dhaid highway in Sharjah on Sunday morning.

A senior official at Sharjah Police said the accident took place at 7am while the 25-year-old Al Hammadi was driving her car from Ajman towards Sharjah. Her daughter was sitting on the passenger seat at the back.

Bus strike

Private bus operators on Chilaw-Negombo and Chilaw-Manelembuwa routes launched a strike in the morning yesterday.

They said that their action was prompted by Wayamba Passenger Transport Authority’s decision to increase the frequency of buses along Chilaw-Negombo road and introduction of a new bus to Chilaw-Manelembuwa road.


Arms, weapons found in jungle

Arms and weapons including anti-aircraft ammunition hidden in a jungle in Sandunpitiya, Welikanda were found by police early yesterday.

Acting on information provided by an LTTE suspect in custody, police launched a search operation in the Sandunpitiya area and recovered a stock of arms hidden inside the jungle around 3.00 a.m. on Monday, police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said.

He said police unearthed 15 RPG bombs, 20 50mm mortar bombs, seven 60mm mortar fuses, 170 anti aircraft ammunition in two boxes and 3,000 MPMG ammunition in six boxes.

Meanwhile, a suspect was arrested along with two hand grenades, a micro pistol, 11 9mm ammunition and two magazines in Kondeniya, Mawanella on Sunday evening.

Surani Rangana (2 1/2 years) of Kitulemada, Teldeniya has been detected with a brain tumour and is being treated by Consultant Neurologist Dr. Jayantha Liyanage of the Kandy Teaching Hospital.

She needs to undergo surgery as soon as possible to cure her life threatening condition and the cost for the surgery is estimated around Rs. 500,000. Her parents appeal from kind donors for help. Irrigation schemes to be renovated

The dilapidated minor irrigation schemes in the Central Province will be renovated by the Provincial Irrigation Department to improve the rural agriculture activities. All dilapidated irrigation schemes in Matale, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts will be renovated. Rs. 30 million has been estimated for this.


Lecture on Gogol

There will be a lecture for schoolchildren on the great Russian writer Nikolai Gogol by renowned critic and writer W.A. Abeysinghe on October 22, at 9.30 a.m. at the D.S. Senanayake Children's Library Auditorium, Kandy.

UNESCO has named 2009, the year in which Gogol's 200th birth anniversary falls, the 'Year of Gogol'.


Fund - raiser for Navy war heroes

The Sri Lanka Navy Seva Vanitha Unit with the aim of raising funds for a housing project to Naval war heroes has organized a cookery demonstration on October 22 at the Mt. Lavinia Hotel (Regency Room) from 3 p.m. onwards.


Blood donation

A blood donation campaign organised by the Old Anandians 70-75 Group to mark Ananda College's 123rd Founders Day celebrations will be held at the schools centenary building on October 31 at 8 a.m. Each blood donor will be presented with a life insurance policy worth Rs. 50,000, said D.C.A. Gunawardena, President of the Group.


Sunethsara arts festival

The annual arts festival "Sunethsara" of the Sunetra Maha Devi Piriven Vidyayatanaya will be held on October 5, 2009 at the Vidyayatana premises.


SLFPJA Annual Conference

The fourth Annual Conference of the Sri Lanka Freedom Professional Journalists Association (SLFPJA) will be held at 4 p.m. on October 22 at the Mahaweli Centre, Ananada Rajakaruna Mawatha, Colombo 7. The Chief Guest will be SLFP General Secretary and Agriculture and Agricultural Services Minister Maitrepala Sirisena. SLFP Treasurer and Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva, W.D.J. Seneviratne, Susil Premajayantha, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa and Ranjith Siyambalapitiya will also participate.


Buddhist talk

Bogoda Premaratne will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on "Less known benefits of Breath Meditation" at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, October 24 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Bail refused for UNP PS member

Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Dharshika Wimalasiri refused a bail application filed on behalf of UNP Central Nuwaragampalatha Pradeshiya Sabha Member Rasika Ekanayake who was earlier remanded on charges of having assaulted and shot a police constable and thereby causing disruption to his duties.

Chief Magistrate further ordered that the suspect be further remanded till October 27. This order was made when the case was called yesterday.
