Aim of education :

Moulding self-confident citizens - PM

The aim of education should be to mould the children as citizens who are self-confident and free from being burdens to the country, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka said at the opening ceremony of a computer unit at Kakulaliya Primary school in Horana recently.

This IT unit was provided to this school as part of the project initiated by the Prime Minister to equip all schools in Horana zone with computer technology before the end of this year.

Prime Minister said children enjoyed every facility which their parents lacked during their schooling days and added that our children are able to march with this new technology today in all spheres.

This new technology would be used for both good and bad purposes. "I urge you all to utilize this only for good purpose," the Prime Minister said. "We as a nation have a unique history behind us. We respect our elders. We have a strong family structure, which is woefully absent in other countries, children in those countries leave their parents at the age of 16 and 17 and they are hardly obedient to them thereafter.

This has resulted in the emergence of Elders Homes in those countries," he said. Our literacy rate is very high in Asia. It is our bounden duty to strengthen this further. Also we have to strengthen our system of 'Daham Pasal Education' so that we can create a moral society in the country, Prime Minister said.

SLFP Horana organizer Widura Wickramanayaka, Kalutara District Chief Sangha Nayaka Ven. Labugama Ananda Thera, Education Director D. Gamage, Principal, teachers and several others were also present.
