Dharma Wickrama Karunaratne and
Wijitha Karunaratne from Iththapane, Agalawatte donated a
six and half foot pair of tusks with a girth of 20 inches
and weighting 238 kg belonging to them to be placed in
custody of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy yesterday.
Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela received this gift in
the presence of Anunayaka of Siyam Maha Nikaya (Kotte
Chapter) Ven. Iththapane Dhammalankara Thera, Kandy

Road concreted

The road from Napana-Kaluanga Deveta to Abasingammedda in the
Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha area has been concreted at a cost of Rs.
300,000 under the Jathika Saviya - Maganaguma program.
Mail along A9 from today
Vavuniya North Reporter
Postal services from Vavuniya to Jaffna along the A9 road will
commence today after a lapse of 3 years, Deputy Post Master General
(Northern Province) V. Kumaraguru said.
The Postal Department sources said that SLTB buses will carry these
letters and parcels from today.
Arms haul found
Police unearthed arms and weapons hidden in a jungle by fleeing LTTE
cadres in Muttur on Tuesday evening.
Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said following information
from an LTTE suspect, police recovered the arms and weapons hidden in a
jungle patch in the Muttur area.

Elderly woman knocked down by lorry

An 85-year-old woman died when she was knocked down by a lorry in
Godakumbura, Beliatta on Tuesday night. A lorry plying to Beliatta
knocked down the woman crossing the road at Godakumbura junction, police
said. The victim was identified as U. Geminona of Godakumbura.The woman
died after admission to Beliatta hospital.The lorry and the driver were
arrested. Beliatta police are investigating
Japan pledges support

Although there is a change of Government in Japan we would continue
to support the development efforts and post conflict development effort
in Sri Lanka, the Leader of the visiting Japanese delegation Member
House of Councillors, and Director Committee on Rules and Administration
Shuji Ikeguchi said on Tuesday.
Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Kunio Takahashi was also present.
The Japanese delegation met the Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha
Bogollagama and held bilateral talks at the Ministry. "We welcome the
Japanese delegation and we wish all success for the newly elected
Government of Japan," he said.
President to inaugurate Adhistana Chaithyaya
The laying of the foundation stone for the construction of the
Adhistana Chaithyaya to commemorate the great national victory will be
held by President Mahinda Rajapaksa at 10.00 a.m. on October 19 in
Anuradhapura.

LTTE Intelligence cadre indicted

An indictment has been filed against an intelligence cadre of the
LTTE for collecting information on former Air Force Commander Donald
Perera and providing it to the LTTE to plan his assassination.
Colombo High Court Judge Deepali Wijesundara fixed the case for
November 4. Attorney General filed indictment against Seiyadu Mohammed
Mutturasa Mohammed Liupin Mullaitivu for collecting information about
the former Air Force Commander between June 30, 2006 and May 31, 2007.
According to the indictment Liupin (29) had gathered information
relating to the whereabouts of the former Air Force Commander and handed
them over to LTTE Intelligence Head Ampalan and Charles.
[Corrections and Clarifications]
The World Bank Colombo office has sent us the following clarification
with regard to our news item titled "WB gives US$ 243 m for highway
which appeared in our issue of October 14, 2009.
"The Road Development Authority under the Ministry of Highways and
Road Development is currently preparing the Second National Road
project, which includes the A12 and part of the A6. The Government of
Sri Lanka has requested the Bank to consider financing for this project
in the amount of US$ 138 million.
The project is expected to be presented to the World Bank Board of
Executive Directors for review in 2010. The World Bank stays committed
to supporting the Government's initiative in improving the road
network."
Islandwide power failure:
Three-member Committee appointed
Secretary to the Ministry of Power and Energy M.M.C. Ferdinando has
informed the Director General of Public Utility Commission to take
immediate action to inquire into the power failures at the Power
Transmission System which affected the entire country on October 9.
The Ministry of Power and Energy has informed the Public Utility
Commission (PUC) that the latter has wide powers to ensure an
uninterrupted power supply to the general public as per Parliament Act
No. 20 of 2009. Accordingly, the PUC has appointed a high profile
committee consisting of three members of engineers and specialists to
inquire into this incident.
They include technical advisor Jayasiri Karunanayake, Dr. Thilak
Siyambalapitiya and Kusum Shanthi. Meanwhile, Ministry sources state
that a Ministry level special committee has also begun investigation
into this power failure.
Death of U Wilfred Perera
U. Wilfred Perera, a retired employee attached to the Education
Ministry and uncle of Lake House photo editor Indrajith Perera passed
away. His remains lie at Boralesgamuwa Funeral Parlour and the funeral
will take place at Boralesgamuwa Public Cemetery today at 5.00 p.m. |
