Natural resources conservation :
Appropriate measures needed - Minister Ranawaka
The Green Month this year is being marked along with the sun overhead
during October 15 - November 15 and in recognition of the service to the
country by the war heroes we say “Canopy of trees over the heads of War
Heroes” Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika
Ranawaka issuing a message to mark the Green Month said.
Even while we are celebrating the Green Month there appears a doubt
whether the month of monsoon rains would experience the annual heavy
rainfall due to the global climate change that may affect our country
too.
In this context it should be recalled that the colonial powers
denuded the lush green forest cover that existed in our country and due
to it we have to face natural calamities like floods climate changes
affecting not only human beings but all forms of life in the entire
country, the Minister said.
It is therefore imperative for us to take appropriate steps to
conserve our natural resources and take stringent measures against those
who continue to denude our forest cover and in this regard the
Environment and Natural Resources Ministry is implementing a number of
environment conservation projects including rural and urban nature
conservation programs but one institution alone could not work for the
conservation and protection of our environment as the whole citizenry
should be conscious of its importance and cooperate to activate a
national nature conservation program, the Minister said in his message.
