PM congratulates medical team:

Mission completes 100 cardiac operations in Galle

Interaction with an expert team of foreign professionals in paediatric cardiac surgery is of paramount importance and great benefit to our own medical professionals Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka said.

He was addressing the reception accorded to the team of medical professionals of Guy's (Paediatric Cardiac) Surgery Mercy Mission which has completed 100 cardiac operations on Sri Lankan children by its seventh consecutive mercy mission to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Galle from October 8 to 18.

The event took place at the Light House Hotel yesterday.

The Guy's Mission is a leading British based Sri Lankan charity in the U.K., conducting annual missions to the island to carry out operations on children with fully investigated and diagnosed congenital cardiac conditions.

The Prime Minister congratulated the Mercy Mission on their successful completion of 1000 surgeries on Sri Lankan children. "I also appreciate the expert service rendered by the Cardiac Surgeon, Cardiologist, and anaesthetic and intensive care physician, and paediatric care nurses and hope that our own medical professionals could learn much from them', the Prime Minister added.

Dr. Namal Gamage, host- surgeon said that Karapitiya Cardiothoracic unit, the first such unit outside Colombo is at present, serving over 40% cardiothoracic patients in the state sector and they have completed over 7,500 operations during this period.

He also explained the long lasting cordial relationship with the Guy's cardiac team mainly for the benefit of the paediatric patients. Dr. Conal Austin (Surgeon), Dr.John Simpson (Paediatric Cardiologist), Directress, Karapitiya Teaching Hospital Priyani Senadheera, Dr. Mohan Jayathilake, and Dr. Y.K.M.Lahie also spoke. Southern Province Governor Kumari Balasooriya was also present.

The Prime Minister also made an inspection tour of the modernized Karapitiya Cardiothoracic Unit of Karapitya Teaching Hospital, Galle
