The majority of the population follow
wrong food patterns which completely destroy nutrients of
food. Vegetables are cut before rinsing and food is cooked
for too long in a higher temperature. Food is also fried
because it is a quick and easy way to prepare. Such methods
destroy important vitamins and other nutrients of food. |
Around 31 percent of Sri Lankan women suffer from anemia. From this
22 percent of young women in the child bearing age suffer from anemia.
The reason for this adverse situation is not financial problems or lack
of nutritious food due to the wrong food pattern of Sri Lankans, a
Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry spokesman said.
He said the low weight birth rate in Sri Lanka is one for every six
newly born infants and it is due to anemic condition of women. According
to latest findings, female children should be brought up from adequate
nutrition to avoid low weight births. Taking care of nutrition after
reaching youth or getting pregnant cannot avoid low weight births, the
spokesman said. According to the spokesman, a recent study conducted by
the Ministry on nutrition status of the country revealed that wrong food
patterns of Sri Lankans destroy most of nutrients while preparing food.
Sri Lanka's maternal mortality rate is 1.39 per 1,000 births and infant
mortality rate is 11.2. This is similar to the levels of developed
countries. |
