Student assault case:

AG’s advice to be sought

Kaduwela Additional District Judge R.A. Ranaraja yesterday directed the Police Headquarters Crime Division who is conducting investigations into the alleged assault on SLIIT student Nipuna Ramanayake to obtain advice from the Attorney General in connection with their ongoing investigations and submit a comprehensive report to court to ascertain whether there are any other suspects in the case, on the next date, December 15.

The Judge Ranaraja directed the suspects to furnish cash and surety bail ordered by the Avissawella High Court on Monday.

At the outset SP Neil Hettiarachchi filing a further report in connection with their investigations said that the dossier of the investigations had been forwarded to the Attorney General and awaiting his instructions to conduct further investigations

SP Hettiarachchi said that they have recorded the evidence of student Nipuna Ramanayaka’s parents and Amal Keerthi of the CCD in connection with the incident which took place on August 4.

Senior Defence Counsel Asoka Weerasooriya said that all ten suspects, including the wife of former CCD Director Vaas Gunawardena and their son have been granted bail by the Avissawella High Court.

Attorney Hemantha Wettasinghe, who watched the interest of the injured student’s family members, submitted that the student had been abducted by several persons and assaulted him causing serious injuries. In this respect the Attorney General’s advice is of paramount importance to ascertain whether there are any other suspects involved in the assault, he said.

Parents of the injured student Nipuna Ramanayake were also present during the proceedings.
