Paris racket bared:

Tigers on trial

Twenty-two cadres of the suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) went on trial Monday for running an extortion racket among Paris’s ethnic Tamil diaspora. The defendants include Nadaraja Matinthiran, the alleged leader in France of the LTTE, which is accused of extorting some five million euros (US $ 7.4 million) from the country’s 75,000 Tamils.

Student assault case:

AG’s advice to be sought

Kaduwela Additional District Judge R.A. Ranaraja yesterday directed the Police Headquarters Crime Division who is conducting investigations into the alleged assault on SLIIT student Nipuna Ramanayake to obtain advice from the Attorney General in connection with their ongoing investigations and submit a comprehensive report to court to ascertain whether there are any other suspects in the case, on the next date, December 15.
