Children’s Day and competition
The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) will hold a painting, drawing and
writing competitions for children on November 14, Saturday from 9.30
a.m. to 1.00 p.m. at its premises (133, Bauddhaloka Mw, Colombo 04) to
commemorate Children’s Day, which falls on November 14, coinciding with
the birthday of the first Indian Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
Children may register their names with the Centre (011-2500014, Telefax
2598674, e-mail iccrcolombo @gmail.com) and are requested to come to the
Centre on November 14 at 9.30 a.m.
White Cane Safety Day
The 40th International White Cane Safety Day organized by the Sri
Lanka Council for the Blind will be held on October 15 at 10 am at the
main auditorium of the Colombo Public Library. Sri Lanka Telecom
Chairperson Leisha de Silva will be the chief guest. Director, National
Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities - Social Services and Social
Welfare Ministry M.D.C. Jayamanna will be the guest of honour. Selected
vision impaired persons will be presented with 50 talking wrist watches,
20 cassette radios, uniforms for 20 chair weavers, 10 self-employment
cash grants of Rs. 10,000 each and five cash grants for housing
assistance of Rs. 20,000 each at the event.
Fisherman in Police net

A Southern fisherman who had done surveillance work on the Galle
Harbour for the LTTE for a planned attack on the harbour in 2007, was
arrested by the Central Province Intelligence Unit on Sunday. The arrest
followed information from a suspect LTTE Sea Tiger named Yogeshwarasa
who is in detention.
Arms haul

The CID unearthed a haul of arms and weapons including suicide kits
following a search operation conducted over a week in Vellaimullivaikkal
in the Mullaitivu district .
CID launched a search operation on information revealed by an LTTE
cadre under custody. The search operation was launched from October 2 to
10 where a large stock of arms and ammunition hidden in a dense jungle
in the Vellamullivaikkal area was found.
Jewellery theft: Woman arrested

The Kandy Police Crimes Unit investigating the robbery of jewellery
worth Rs. 1.9 million from the residence of a woman company secretary in
Mapanawathura, Kandy has arrested a suspect said to be her cousin in
this connection.
On interrogation, the suspect has confessed to having mortgaged the
robbed items to two banks in Kandy.
Dr. Gamani Corea’s Guardianship transferred

Colombo District Judge Laffar Thahir on Monday ordered the transfer
of the guardianship of Dr Gamani Corea and his assets from Ceylinco
Group Chairman Lalith Kotalawala to a relative of Dr. Corea and a
private company.
The Court ordered to appoint Chandani Anoma Gunawardene as the
guardian of Dr. Gamini Corea and appoint Jacey Trust Services (Pvt) Ltd
as the manager of his assets after Lalith Kotalawala expressed his
consent to do so through a letter dated October 10, 2009.
Lalith Kotalawala expressed his consent in response to an Order Nisi
issued by the Colombo District Court in connection with a motion filed
by C. A. Gunawardene on an earlier date.
Death of Mrs MPR Wheihena
The death occurred of M.P.R. Wheihena (84). She is the mother-in-law
of Foreign Employment Promotion Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.
She served at Dharmaraja College and Mahamaya College. Mrs. Wheihena
is the wife of leading businessman of Kandy DSE Wheihena and the mother
of five.
Her remains are lying at Minister Rambukwella’s residence at
Anniwatte Bahirawakanda, Kandy. Cremation takes place at Mahaiyawa
Cemetery at 3 p.m. today, October 14.
Diocesan Council sessions
The 124th sessions of Diocesan Council of the Diocese of Colombo,
Church of Ceylon will be held on October 16, 17 and 18. On October 16 at
4 p.m. an Even Song will be sung at the Cathedral of Christ, the Living
Saviour at Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7.
The Diocesan Council will be chaired by the Bishop of Colombo, the
Rt. Rev. Duleep de Chickera. The Council consists of all the clergy
holding the licence of the Bishop of Colombo of the Diocese of Colombo
and representatives of the parishes of the Diocese of Colombo. The chief
guest at the opening sessions of the Council will be Rt. Revd. Dr.
Thomas Soundaranayagam, the Bishop of Jaffna.
The sessions will start at 5.30 p.m. on October 16 at the Diocesan
Council Chambers at the Bauddhaloka Mawatha and continue on 17 and 18 as
well.
Chinese National Day seminar
The Sri Lanka-China Friendship Association has organised a ‘Three
decades of economic reform and open policy in China’ at the Sri Lanka
Foundation Institute on October 14 at 3 p.m.
It is organised to commemorate the 60th National Day of China.
Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China Yang Xiuping will be the
guest of honour.
Speakers include Professor Jagath Wickramasinghe, former Director
General NIE and former Vice Chancellor of Sri Jayawardenapura University
and Karunarathna Paranvithana. Ananda Goonatilleke, President, Sri
Lanka-China Friendship Association will chair the sessions.
Workshop
A workshop on the theme “role of psychological advisory service”
organised by the Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare to mark
National Advisory service day will be held at the HARTI, Colombo on
October 15 at 9 a.m. for the benefit of management level officers of
Ministries. Each Ministry has been requested to send two management
level officers of either sex to attend the seminar. Names of the

Tharawo Igilethi
The stage play ‘Tharawo Igilethi’ directed by Lucian Bulathsinghala
in aid of the welfare association of the employees of the Education
Ministry will be staged at the Ananda Kularatne Hall, Ananda College
Colombo today at 4.30 and 6.30 p.m.
