Int’l Disaster Reduction Day
The United Nations General Assembly has, by resolution, designated
the second Wednesday of October of every year as the International Day
for Natural Disaster Reduction.
Accordingly, since 1990, the global disaster management community
commemorates this day.
The promotion of disaster reduction and disaster preparedness are the
main objectives of the Disaster Reduction Day which, this year, falls
today.
Sri Lanka has made significant advances in the sphere of disaster
management over the last few years. Especially in the aftermath of the
Asian tsunami of 2004, some of the main developments are the enactment
of the Disaster Management Act and consequently the establishment of a
Ministry mandated with the subject of disaster management.
