The Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka
Forest Conservation Department will conduct tree planting campaigns and
awareness programs on green concepts and practices to celebrate the
National Green Month from October 15 to November 15 under the theme of
'building a Sri Lanka in a greener and cleaner environment'.
Railways Commercial Superintendent Wijaya Samarasinghe told the Daily
News that documentary films will be shown and educational programs will
be held to make the public aware of forest conservation, management,
environment cleaning, tree planting and forestry activities at the Fort
Railway Station premises on October 16 at 9.30 a.m.
"We need to increase the tree cover in sensitive areas such as in the
vicinity of railway stations with the aim of creating a green and clean
environment," he said. He said these programs will be held at all
railway stations simultaneously with the main function at the Fort
Railway Station.
Tree planting programs and distributing posters on the beauty of the
environment will be displayed at railway stations across the country.
"We will also distribute plants and seedlings to be planted near
station platforms while providing sufficient technical knowledge on how
to plant and maintain trees on these lands," he said.
