Lions offer free job training

The International Association of Lions Club District 306-2, Sri Lanka will launch a job oriented training program for youth in E solutions through IT.

The program will cover all provinces including North and East in 2010 and will see youth absorbed into gainful employment following training. This job oriented training conducted free will be carried out with the aid of the international links of Lions especially in the United Kingdom.

This is the first such program to be conducted in Sri Lanka.

This is in keeping with 2009 being declared the Year of English and IT by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and to make Sri Lanka ‘paperless’ by 2015.

Those between 18 and 22 years who have sat for their ALs will be eligible to apply for the training course which is of 3 months duration.

Applications should be sent with their bio-data mentioning the Province and District along with two stamped Rs.15 envelopes addressed to “The Job Training,PO Box 2274 Colombo.

Applications close on October 30.


ITN to telecast Korean dramas

The Korean Embassy in Sri Lanka handed over two Korean dramas Autumn in My Heart and Full House to Independent Television Network (ITN) in Colombo.

ITN will telecast Full House and Autumn in My Heart from October 10 every Saturday from 5 to 6 pm. From October 10 ITN will telecast Korean language program Hello every Saturday and Sunday from 5.40 to 5.50 am.


Drunken drivers nabbed

Panadura police nabbed 345 motorists who had allegedly driven motor vehicles and three wheelers under the influence of liquor.

Panadura Magistrate Thusara Rajasinghe imposed fines ranging from Rs. 7,500 to Rs. 9,500 with one months’ suspended sentence.


World Food Day celebrations in Anuradhapura

Celebrations to mark World Food Day will be held at the Institute of Post Harvest Technology, Anuradhapura on October 16.

Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithripala Sirisena will be the chief guest.

This year’s United Nations theme for World Food Day is ‘Achieving food security in time of crisis”.

Sri Lanka’s theme is ‘Let’s fight poverty’.


Liquor shops closed

The Government has decided to close all liquor outlets in Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts on October 9 and 10 due to the Southern Provincial Council Election scheduled to be held on October 10, Acting Excise Commissioner L. K. G. Gunawardene announced yesterday.


Blood donation

A blood donation camp organised by a public organisation will be held at Jaliyagama Sri Bodhirukkaramaya in Aturaliya Divisional Secretariat area today.


Public lecture

Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka Executive Director Dr. Saman Kelegama will give a public lecture on “Global Economic Recovery and Sri Lanka” at 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 8 at SLAAS Auditorium 120/10, Vidya Mawatha (Off Wijerama Mawatha), Colombo 07.


Book launch

The launching of the book of Small Village Tank Systems of Sri Lanka: Their Evolution, Setting, Distribution and Essential Functions by Vidyajothi Dr. C. R. Panabokke will be held at the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute (HARTI) on October 7 at 4.45 p.m.

Vice Chancellor, University of Vocational Technology Prof. Kapila Goonasekara, will be the chief guest. Welcome address will be delivered by Director of HARTI Prof. Ranjith Premalal De Silva.


CD release

The Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation Muslim Service will release a collection of live religious talks by eminent Moulavis during the Ramadhan 2009 on CD on October 8 at 10.15 a.m. at the Ananda Samarakoon Multi Studio (SLBC). It will be held under the patronage of SLBC Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe.

The IPM Sri Lanka has organized a guest lecture on “Why we need new thinking in human resources development for corporate success” by Dr. Asoka Jinadasa at the IPM Auditorium on October 8 from 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm.


Education symposium

The Open University of Sri Lanka Chemistry Department in association with its Buckyball Society are holding the Professor J.N.O. Fernando Farewell Symposium on the theme “Chemical Education in Sri Lanka - Impediments, Challenges and Prospects” on Wednesday, October 14 from 9 am to 1 pm at the Open University Auditorium at Nawala.

The annual ‘Katina Cheevara Pooja’ of Malwatte Maha Viharaya, Kandy will be held on october 11 Sunday jointly organised by Sri Sangharaja Gunanusmarana Sangamaya its Kantha Sangamaya and the Buddhist Affairs Department at the Thumpane Pansala.
