Jordan says 14 Lankan domestic aides attempted suicide

Domestic helper abuse unacceptable - Minister

Jordan's Labour Ministry said 14 Sri Lankan domestic helpers have attempted suicide this year by jumping from tall buildings due to "hard working conditions", compared to eight cases in 2008, a figure Labour Minister Ghazi Shbeikat called "unacceptable".

A Ministry team is drafting health and professional safety regulations, which will ensure the enhancement of work conditions of domestic helpers in the Kingdom, consistent with a recent Government amendment that included domestic helpers under the Labour Law, Shbeikat told reporters on Monday.
