Medical centre opening

The Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Medical Centre will open on October 6 at 11.30 a.m. in the presence of Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya and other dignitaries.


Elders’ Day celebrations

The annual Elders’ Day celebrations of the Day Care Centres and the Elders Home, Meddepatanawatta, Ampitiya will be held on October 11 at 9.00 a.m. at the Day Care Centre hall.

Road development

An accelerated road development program is under way in Alawwa Pradeshiya Sabha. Rs. 5 million has been allocated for this.


MP’s house set on fire

A house and office building belonging to Puttalam District Parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara at Madampe has been set ablaze by some unidentified persons on October 4, night. The fire has caused extensive damage to the house and office equipment. Madampe Police are conducting investigations.


Burglary

A shop in the Nawaapitiya Police area in the Selam bridge village has been burgled at night. The gang has gained entrance to the shop by break opening the rear door.


Smart cops

A suspect who robbed jewellery and cash valued at Rs. 100,000 from a lady teacher's house at Poramadulla was arrested by officers of the Hanguranketha Police Intelligence Unit along with the loot minutes after the robbery.

Police stumbled on the suspect during a search operation in Hanguranketha to nab suspicious persons.

The suspicious behaviour of the robber had led police to arrest and question him. On interrogation he had confessed to having committed the robbery. It was hours later that police received a complaint from the teacher concerned about the robbery. Investigations are continuing. DIG Gamini Navaratne said the alert policemen who nabbed the suspect would be rewarded.


Wanted by CID

Julian Fernandopulle and Ajith Nishantha Fernando of Marawila Negombo are wanted by the CID in connection with an alleged fraud involving Rs. 5,500,000. Police Headquarters said they have duped a bank and obtained a loan of Rs. 5,500,000 by presenting a forged deed for a property belonging to another resident in Marawila. Any information leading to their arrest should be given to Information Director, CID, New Secretariat Building, Colombo 1 or on telephone 0112320141. Extension 144 or 146.


Teachers day

The Teachers day celebration to mark the International Teachers Day will be held today at Hindu College, Bambalapitiya under the patronage of Principal T. Muthukumaraswamy. The ceremony will be held at the school's main prayer hall at 11 am.


Awards ceremony

The awards ceremony of the All Island inter-school Dancing Competition will be held at the Devi Balika Vidyalaya hall, Colombo on October 12.


Katina Pinkama

The Vas Pinkama of Sri Dhammaramaya, Nugegoda organised by Lyceum International School in collaboration with the Dayaka Sabha and Sri Sucharithawardana Dhamma School will be held on October 10 and 11.


Buddhist talk

Ven. Olande Ananda Thera will deliver a Public Buddhist talk in English on "Living in the Present" at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, October 10 at 4.30 p.m. at Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.

 


Winds damage 43 houses

Forty-three houses were partly damaged due to strong winds which swept across six Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the Ratnapura District on October 1 and 2 said District Secretary S.W. Gunadasa.

The roof of the Provincial Health Services Office storeroom was also damaged while the roof of the Wewelkandura Tamil Vidyalaya building was damaged when an uprooted tree fell on it. The District Secretary said steps would be taken to pay compensation for the damaged houses.


Suspect arrested

A suspect wanted in connection with the attempted murder of a secretary attached to Minister Duminda Dissanayake during the last NCP elections was arrested by the Kekirawa police. The suspect Ajith Pushpakumara was produced before Kekirawa Magistrate and Additional District Judge Srinith Wijesekara and remanded till October 14.


Suicide kit recovered

A powerful suicide kit and other explosive items were recovered from an abandoned house in Selvanagar, Vavuniya on Sunday evening.

The suicide kit is suspected to have been owned by a member of the LTTE's Charles Anthony Brigade, police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said. Police also recovered four detonators, a claymore mine, a remote control device, a cyanide capsule and three number tags along with the suicide kit.


NWP Education Ministry to computerise data

The North Western Province Education Ministry has made arrangements to computerise the data of all staff members attached to the NWP Education Ministry. The objective of the project is to update the whereabouts of educational employees to facilitate them.


Program to enhance traditional craftsmen

The National Gem and Jewellery Authority will introduce a special program to upgrade the skills of traditional craftsmen so that their incomes could be increased said, National Gem and Jewellery Authority Chairman Hasitha Thilakaratne.

“According to the program the Authority would pay special attention to develop the skills of craftsmen with training and introduction of modern methods so that the quality of their products could be improved and provide a better market for their products. This will also enable them to participate at international exhibitions with greater success. They could also gain knowledge at international level in this industry,” he said. “National Gem and Jewellery Authority has taken steps to provide silver at a reasonable price.

“The Authority has already provided 15 kilograms of silver to each of the traditional craftsmen engaged in making silver handicrafts. “They will also introduce new jewellery designs for craftsmen ” the Chairman said.

Chinese language course, awards ceremony

The passing out ceremony of the 1st batch of the six months Chinese Language Course conducted by the National Youth Services Council will be held on October 6th at 10 a.m. at Viharamaha Devi Human Resources Centre, Mirijjawila, Hambantota. The Chinese Language lecturer of Sabaragamuwa University Prof. Wai Myen acted as the resource person.

Fifty trainees will get their awards at the ceremony under the patronage of the Youth Affairs Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi.
