Youth drowns

A 19-year-old youth was drowned in the Panadura sea. Ten other youths had a narrow escape from drowning on Sunday. Iqbal Mohommed of Keselwatte, Colombo was the victim. A verdict of accidental death was recorded at the inquest held by the Panadura Inquirer into Sudden Deaths D.W. Adikaram at the Panadura Base Hospital yesterday.


Treasure hunters remanded

Eleven treasure hunters were arrested along with equipment used for the hunt on Sunday in two separate places.

Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said, police on information rounded up seven suspects hunting a treasure in Damana.

Police also seized a trishaw bearing number EP QS 1892 along with other equipment used for the hunt.

Meanwhile, four other treasure hunters were nabbed by Welioya police on Sunday. "The suspects were netted on information received while they were preparing to dig out a treasure inside the dense jungle in the Weli-Ela area," SDIG Mediwake said.

The suspects were produced before Kebithigollewa Magistrate and remanded until October 8.


Illegal trishaw parking

Illegal parking of three wheelers in the evening near the bus halts of Aruppola, Watapuluva and even Akurana at Kandy's main bus stand near the Ismail Clock Tower is a nuisance to the public waiting to board passing buses to their destinations.


Road to be tarred

The Rajangana-Puttalam main road will be improved by tarring it under the 'Vari Pubuduwa' program.

The office of the resident irrigation engineer in Rajangana will direct the project worth Rs. 110 million.


Dr P.B. Jayasundera appointed Treasury Secretary

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday made three high level appointments to the State sector in which Dr. P.B. Jayasundera was appointed as Treasury Secretary.

Dr. Jayasundera has vast experience in the State finance sector having earlier functioned in the same capacity and the Finance Ministry. Sumith Abeysinghe was made the Cabinet Office Secretary. D. Wijesinghe was elevated as Sri Lanka's High Commissioner for South Africa.


Transfers to National schools

Teachers appointed to Provincial Council run schools after December 31, 1989 can now obtain transfers to National schools.

The Education Department has cleared the obstacle placed on these teachers seeking transfers to National schools by Circular No ED/01/27/1/2009 circularised to Provincial Governors, Public Service Commission Secretaries, Chief Secretaries and Provincial Education Secretaries.

The Ceylon Teachers’ Union in a press release said this is a result of the agitational campaigns launched by Teacher unions.

However this concession has now created a stampede among provincial teachers to gain transfers to the 330 national schools.


Polling card distribution until Oct 2

The distribution of polling cards for the October 10, Southern Provincial Council election commenced on September 22. It will conclude on October 2, Elections Department sources said.


Death of N.U. Yapa

One of the pioneers of library science who had made a great contribution to the propagation of library science, N.U. Yapa died. He was 65.

Yapa was also a founder member of the Library Association and was chief education officer who taught library science to a large number of students. His services would be missed by the library and information sectors. He received his master's degree in IT from a Canadian University and his bachelor's degree in Information and Library Science from the Colombo University.

The remains lie at the residence, 20/16, Gnanawimala Mawatha, Aturugiriya. The funeral takes place at the Oruwala General Cemetery, Aturugiriya on September 30 at 3.00 p.m.


Sir John Kotelawala commemoration

The 29th death anniversary commemoration ceremony of General Sir John Kotelawala will be held at the statue of the late Sir John Kotelawala at the Kotelawala Defence University, Ratmalana on Sunday, October 4 with laying of a wreath by the Chief Guest Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetilake at 10 am.


Book launch

A book “Uggal-Aluthnuwara Aithihasika Katharagam Devala Watha” written by A.M. Kulasinghe Rtd. Deputy Education Director relating to the historical and cultural value of the Uggal Aluthnuwara Katharagam Devale in Balangoda will be released at a ceremony at the Devala premises on October 2 at 4.00 p.m. Most Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Balangoda Siri Suddhammavansa Maha Nayaka Thera of Amarapura Siri Saddharmavansa Maha Nikaya will preside the ceremony.

The Sambasha 16 literary work published by the Education Ministry’s Pirivena Education Division will be launched at a ceremony at the Education Ministry auditorium on September 30 at 2 pm. Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara and Minister Susil Premajayantha will be the chief guests.

Yawwana Sammana Ulela

The Kurunegala District Yawwana Sammana Ulela will be held on September 30, at 2.40 p.m at the Kurunegala District Youth Services Council Auditorium at Malkaduwawa, Kurunegala. This function is organized by the youth services council district office, Kurunegala.


Cultural pageant

A cultural pageant Sisu Prathibha Prabha (glory of students’ talents) organized by the students’ union of the St. Joseph Girls’ School Nugegoda will be held on October 2 at 2.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. of the National Youth Theatre, Maharagama.

The Sri Lanka Cancer Society-Moratuwa branch is organizing a fund-raiser entitled ‘Stop N Shop’ to collect much needed funds for its on-going activities in the prevention and control of cancer. Missing

Mrs. Dodampagamage Lalitha Satharasinghe has gone missing since last Sunday, September 27 afternoon. She is 60 years and a kidney patient under dialysis. She was last seen wearing a light brown skirt and a light brown mix blouse. Lectures

The Horana Teachers Centre has organised a series of lectures on Sinhala Language and Sinhala Literature for the benefit of GCE (O/L) candidates who sit for the GCE O/L Exam this year. The program which started on September 23 will continue till October 5.

The lectures will be held in 11 centres in Bandaragama, Bulathsinhala and Horana Education Divisions.

Acting CJ

Senior Supreme Court Judge Shiranee Bandaranayake took oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday morning as the Acting Chief Justice. She will act in the post until the return of Chief Justice Asoka de Silva who is on an official visit overseas.
