Intel reaffirms commitment to SLSEF
The renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Sri
Lanka Science and Engineering Fair (SLSEF) for year 2009/2010 took place
recently at Isurupaya.

A collaboration between the Ministry of Education (MoE), the National
Science Foundation (NSF), Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), and
Intel; SLSEF is affiliated to the Intel International Science and
Engineering Fair (ISEF) - the world's largest pre-college science
competition.
The signatories to the renewal of the MoU, which seeks to reaffirm
the partnership between the stakeholders, were Nimal Bandara of the MoE,
Dr. Sarath Abayawardana of NSF, Eng. H. D. S. De Alwis of IESL and
Indika De Zoysa of Intel.
A national platform for showcasing student scientific ingenuity,
SLSEF aims at uniting young scientific minds and enhance innovative
thinking, while investing in a new generation of pioneers in mathematics
and science. Affiliated to Intel ISEF, the winners of SLSEF represent
Sri Lanka at the world's preeminent science competition for pre-college
students.
Country Manager, Intel EM Ltd -Sri Lanka Liaison office Indika de
Zoysa said, "Intel is proud to extend its commitment to improve the
quality of local education and motivate youthful innovators for another
year via SLSEF. Renewing our collaboration with the Ministry of
Education, the National Science Foundation and the Institute of
Engineers Sri Lanka is concurrent with our ongoing efforts to ensure
local students are provided equal opportunities to succeed in a
knowledge-driven economy.
Through its affiliation to Intel ISEF, Sri Lankan students are
granted international exposure and the chance to explore, discover,
innovate, and tackle scientific questions, using authentic research
practices to create solutions to the challenges of tomorrow."
The winners of SLSEF 2007 Yasith K. Lokuge of Ananda College, Praveej
Malinda Jayasinghe of St Anthony's College and Sajeewa Dinesh
Hendurugoda of Nugawela Central represented Sri Lanka at Intel ISEF in
May 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia.
The winners of the SLSEF 2008 Chandula Padmasiri of Ananda College,
Yenushka Madusanka Dissanayake of Gnanodaya Maha Vidyalaya, and a
three-member team comprising Nishadi Ekanayake, Chaturika Sithumini and
Nazeela Mazahim, of Southlands College, Galle represented Sri Lanka at
Intel ISEF in May 2009 in Reno, Nevada, USA.
E. Chandula Padmasiri became the first Sri Lankan student to win a
Grand Award at Intel ISEF 2009. Padmasiri was adjudged third in the
Electrical and Mechanical category for his portable microscope
invention. He received $1000 in prize money.
