Discussion ends without agreement

A discussion between representatives of the Employers Federation and the trade unions on the demand for on increase in the daily wages of plantation sector workers ended without agreement yesterday. Employers Federation's plantation sector President Lalith Obeysekara said that trade unions had demanded to increase their basic salary to Rs.500. He said that the Federation had agreed to increase the daily wage by Rs.70. Trade union leaders have not agreed to this amount as it is below their demand for an increase to Rs.500.

Ceylon Workers Congress President and Youth Empowerment and Socio Economic Development Minister Arumugam Thondaman also participated in the discussion.
