Toilet facilities to Menik Farm Welfare Centre

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Construction and Engineering Services Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne to urgently construct 500 toilets at IDP welfare centres at Menik Farm, Chettikulam.

The construction involves septic tanks for every five toilet units. The estimated cost will be Rs. 20,500,000.

The funds for this are already available with the Ministry.

The construction work has to be completed within three weeks.

Due to the urgency and since the State Development and Construction Corporation (SDCC) has already been mobilized at Chettikulam, the Ministry will entrust the work to the SDCC subject to approval of the Cabinet.

An advance payment of 50 percent of the total cost will be paid to the SDCC and the balance to be paid on completion of the work.


E-learning and ICT capacity building for ‘Piriven’ education

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Education Minister A.D. Susil Premajayanth to implement the ‘introduction of e-learning and ICT capacity building to Piriven Education’ at a cost of USD 10 million utilizing the funds received from the Chinese Government.

The ‘Piriven’ education structure plays a vital role in the Education System in Sri Lanka. There are 691 ‘Pirivenas’ within the country including 448 primary (Mulika) Prirvenas, 189 major (Maha) Pirivenas and 54 Vidyayathanas.

There are 56,170 bikkhu and ordinary students in Pirivenas studying Buddhism and general subjects. A total of 5,096 teachers serving in these institutions, including 2,837 bikkhu teachers and 3,069 ordinary teachers.

Its of utmost importance to provide the same qualitative and contemporary education to those who are studying in Pirivenas, irrespective of whether they are bikkhu or ordinary students.

The Government has declared 2009 as the ‘Year of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and English’. The declaration is to develop competencies in these areas as they are crucial for obtaining knowledge and skills in contemporary education.


New bus stand at Naula Town centre

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to award the construction work of the new bus stand at Naula town centre to the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau on engineering design and build basis deviating from normal procurement procedure subject to the approval of rates by the Standing Technical Committee of the Construction and Engineering Services Ministry.

There are approximately 100 passenger buses cross through Naula daily. Further, about 3,000-5,000 people commute to the town daily for services and activities.

Construction of a bus stand has been identified as a priority project at Naula town under the Greater Dambulla Development plan.

The proposed project consists of seven bus destinations, office space, toilet facility for disabled at the ground floor and 10 shops, toilets for males at upper floor.


Building for University of Kelaniya

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Higher Education Minister Prof. W.A. Wishwa Warnapala for the construction of a three storied pre-cast building for the Faculty of Commerce and Management of the University of Kelaniya.

The building after completion will have a gross floor area of 600 square meters.

The estimated cost for this project is Rs. 25 million and the funds will be obtained from the General Treasury. Construction work will commence in 2010.


Library building for Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute - Gampaha

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Higher Education Minister Prof. W.A. Wishwa Warnapala to construct a three storied library building with a gross flow area of 990 square meters at a cost of Rs. 85 million.

The project will commence this year, phasing out within a period of two years.


Coconut Cultivation Board, regional office for Kandy

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Plantation Industries Minister D.M. Jayaratne to establish a regional office of the Coconut Cultivation Board in Kandy District.


Allocation of land at Kirulapone to Sri Lanka Economic Association

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to allocate a land owned by UDA in Kirulapone to the Sri Lanka Economic Association.

The land was received by the UDA earlier for institutional purposes.


Car park complex with multi storied commercial building

The Cabinet has approved a memorandum submitted by Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena to release a land plot located in Colombo 02 to Rank Entertainment Holding (Pvt) Ltd. to set up a multi storey car park.

The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) has approved an investment application submitted by Rank Entertainment Holding (Pvt) Ltd. to set up a project to construct and operate a multi story car park at Colombo 02 with an envisaged investment of US$ 5.5 million.
