Labelling must for polythene products from Aug 15

The labeling of polythene products, including lunch sheets and garbage bags is a must from August 15 in keeping with a decision taken by the Central Environment Authority (CEA).

The Authority's Director General Pasan Gunasena yesterday said the CEA together with the Consumer Protection Authority will take legal action against those who will not label their products as required.

Gunasena said: "It will be imperative that polythene product manufacturers label their items with their company name or the name of the manufacturer, the date of manufacture, the product's generic name and most importantly the density of micron because selling polythene products that are less than 20 micron in density will be prohibited as they cannot be recycled."

He said the label should also carry the license number of the Environment Protection, Registration number of the manufacturing company, length and width of the product in millimetres.
