General Nalin Seneviratna passes away
General G. D. G. N. (Nalin) Seneviratne VSV, 78, the former Commander
of the Army (1985-1988) passed away yesterday morning. He was the 10th
Commander of the Army. His funeral with full military honours will take
place on Saturday at the General Cemetery, Borella, Colombo.
After he joined the army, he was commissioned on July 30, 1953 as a
Second Lieutenant. He was promoted to the ranks of Captain (1958), Major
(1963), Lieutenant Colonel (1971), Colonel (1977), Brigadier (1981), and
Major General (1985). He took over the duties as 10th Commander of the
Army on 11th February 1985 and retired from the army on August 16, 1988.
He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General on August 1, 1986
while he was serving as the Commander.
He held a number of senior appointments in the Army before he assumed
duties as Commander. He served as Commander for then 54 Force
Headquarters in Jaffna from January 15, 1984 until he was promoted to
the rank of Major General to become the 10th Commander of the Army.
