It was the sailors eighth win in 12 outings and their fourth
successive victory having beaten three formidable teams CR and FC
(18-3), Kandy SC (12-11) and CH and FC (22-14) in their last three
matches - a remarkable achievement for a team which is playing
competitive rugby after a lapse of three years.
Navy owe their success to their dedicated coach Ronnie Ibrahim who
has taken great pains to mould them into a formidable outfit. They
should be a strong contender for the Clifford Cup which begins in two
weeks time.
Kandy Sports Club retained the Caltex 'A' Division League title for a
record ninth successive year with a superb 26-16 win over arch rivals CR
and FC at Nittawela on Saturday. It was Kandy's three quarters who paved
the way for their victory with a dazzling display.
Fly half Fazil Marija caught the CR defence napping with his
side-stepping and speed while hard running centres Pradeep Liyanage and
Gayan Weeraratne pierced the Red Shirts defence time and again. Winger
Sanjeewa Jayasinghe always looked dangerous with his powerful runs down
the flank.
The Red Shirts were let down by their three quarters who squandered
the hard earned possession by the forwards. The CR 'eight' gave a
sterling display with skipper Karthelis, Lewke, Anuja Perera, Henry
Terrence and Danushka Perera being outstanding.
CH and FC staged a superb second half rally to score a smashing 43-20
win over the formidable Sri Lanka Army on Friday at Maitland Crescent.
After being contained in the first half CH's power-packed forwards
came up with a marvellous display in the next 40 minutes to outplay
their counterparts. Lock forward Dinesh Sanjeewa was a source of
inspiration to his team-mates with his fiery loose play and was richly
rewarded with two tries.
He was ably supported by Achala Perera, Sathya Ranatunge, Gayashan
Wijesinghe, Dimuth Perera and Dilanka Wijesekera. Army's three quarters
gave a fine performance in the first half with wingers Saliya
Handapangoda and Lankatilleke testing the CH defence to the hilt with
their daring runs but were starved of possession in the second half.
