No UNP presence in Uva - Transport Minister
Chaminda Perera
Transport Minister Dullas Allahapperuma yesterday said that the UNP’s
election campaign is so feeble in the Uva Province that not a single
green flag or cutout is visible in the two districts. The Minister said
the United National Party has started levelling baseless allegations
against the Government to cover up its inherent political impotence.
“The UNP received a number of serious defeats since the North Central
Provincial election and this has made them feel lethargic and feeble,”
he said.
While refuting UNP allegation that the Government has unleashed
terror on opposition political parties contesting the forthcoming
election, the Minister said there is no threat for opposition political
parties to engage in election campaigning at the forthcoming Jaffna
Urban Council election .
The candidates contesting the elections for the Vavuniya Urban and ,
Jaffna Municipal and Uva Provincial Council elections are completely
free to campaign for their victory.
The Government has not placed any obstacle to the exercising of their
democratic political rights, he said. Allahapperuma said the UPFA has
put in motion a well-planned mechanism aimed at achieving victory at the
Uva Provincial Council election.
“Our supporters have covered 80 percent of homes in the Uva Province
and educated them on the Government’s endevour to bring prosperity to
the country.”
The Minister said the UPFA has conducted over 183 out of the planned
880 pocket meetings covering 12 electorates in the Badulla and
Moneragala districts. “We have planned over 10 main election rallies
with the participation of senior Cabinet Ministers.” He said President
Mahinda Rajapaksa will address two major election rallies in Badulla and
Moneragala districts. “President Rajapaksa has already initiated a
program to interact with civil society representatives in the province
ahead of the election,” he said.
