Historic day for country’s Defence establishment

Chief of Defence Staff, Commanders assume duties

Sri Lanka marks a historic day today in the sphere of the defence sector with three key personalities in the Sri Lanka Armed Forces, Chief of Defence Staff, General Sarath Fonseka, Army Commander Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya and Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe assuming duties after they were appointed to these posts by President Mahinda Rajapaksa with effect from today.

New Army Commander

Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya an illustrious officer from the Sri Lanka Armoured Corps will take over the command of the Sri Lanka Army as the 19th commander succeeding General Sarath Fonseka who relinquished duties yesterday to take over the post of Chief of Defence Staff.

Vice Admiral Tisara Samarasinghe having joined the Sri Lanka Navy in 1974 as an Officer Cadet won the “Sword of Honour” of the fourth intake at the Naval and Maritime Academy Trincomalee.
