Colombo Tennis Championships from July 18

The 94th Colombo Tennis Championships, organised and conducted by the
playing section of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association, will be held from
July 18 to August 09 at the SLTA Courts Green Path. This forthcoming
tournament is being sponsored by Ceylon Cold Stores and Colonial
Hardware Stores with the active support of Vision Care and United
Sports.
Being an 'A' grade tournament that drew around 500 entries last year
the participation for this year's championship too appears to be equally
good - with a fair amount of national players and some good players
currectly studying abroad expected to take part, in order to gain their
rankings.
The qualifying draw and main draw will be held on July 16. The events
for the Juniors for those in the age groups U 10 and U 12 will only be
the singles for both boys and girls - whilst it will be singles and
doubles for boys and girls U 14, U 16 and U 18.
The open events will be the singles and doubles for men and women and
the mixed doubles. The senior events will be the singles and doubles for
those over 35, ov 45, ov 55, and ov 65. The tournament committee
chairman is Pavan Nadarajah while the referee is Avantha Suranimala.
It was gathered that if the championship does amongst others turn out
to be a viable financial exercise then the monies so accruing, will be
made use for the development of the infra structure of the SLTA playing
section and for the furtherance of tennis in the club. |
