Elephant Pass Salterns production to resume
Minister Kumara Welgama assures Employees:
The production activities of the Elephant Pass Salterns would be
started quickly as an accelerated program has been made under the
“Uthuru Vasanthaya” to accelerate production of all factories as the
terrorism in North has now wiped out, said Industrial Development
Minister Kumara Welgama.

The Minister stated so, when a group of old employees arrived at the
Ministry to request the Minister to re-open the Elephant Pass Salterns,
which has been abandoned due to LTTE terrorism.
The employees pointed out that this saltern is the largest saltern in
the Island, which has an annual production capacity of 50,000 metric
tons and there will be no production fluctuation as there is a fair
climate to have a fair harvest.
The employees further pointed out that in the future the local demand
could be fulfilled and the Minister stated that he will pay special
attention regarding that. The Minister said he will take action to start
the production activities concurrently at the Paranthan Chemical
Factory.
Also special attention has been given to fulfil the local demand with
the ability to start the manufacturing of caustic soda, chlorine and
sulphuric acid.
He said in the future the required chlorine to the Water Supply Board
could be supplied and he gave instructions to the Ministry Secretary to
start the manufacturing activities of the Chemical Factory early.
The Minister stated that experience of the old employees would be
utilised for the saltern and the employees are thinking positively that
it will be helpful for the future development of the industry.
Industrial Development Ministry Secretary R.V.D. Piyathilake also
participated.
