Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kandy continued their dominance in the
local hockey scene when they became champions at the Kandy schools girls
under-17 league hockey tournament organised by the Kandy District
Schools Hockey Association and worked off for four days at the
University Grounds, Peradeniya and concluded on Tuesday.
Seetha Devi Balika Vidyalaya had an unbeaten run in the tournament.
In their first match they trounced Hemamali Balika Vidyalaya 11-0.
Sounding the boards for Seetha Devi BV were Upeksha Tillakaratne (3),
Nilusha Dilrukshi (2), Sathuni Guruge (2), Kosala Pathirana (2), Ayesha
Indunil (1), Tharaki Karunaratne (1).
In their second game they beat Girls High School, Kandy 6-0 after
leading 3-0 at half time.
The goal getters for Seetha Devi BV were Samudara Chandrika (3),
Tharaka Karunaratne (1), Kosala Pathirana (1) and Sathuni Guruge (1).
But in their third game they met with some stiff opposition from St.
Anthony's Girls College, Kandy before squeezing through to a 1-0 win. At
half time there was no scoring.
The stickers from St. Anthony's Girls College put up a gallant
performance before going down but after a big fight.
They almost created an upset. Scoring the winning goal for the
champions was centre forward Upeksha Tillakaratne. In their final they
met with some strong opposition from Pushpadana Girls College who did
not allow the champions to have their own way. Both teams fortified
their defence and prevented any breach.
The fitting result was a scoreless draw.
Pushpadana Girls College who finished runner up but remained unbeaten
beat Girls High School 10-0, beat Hemamali BV 3-0 and beat St. Anthony's
Girls College 2-0.
The results of other matches played were St. Anthony's Girls College
beat Hemamali BV 1-0, and also beat Girls High School 2-0.
Seetha Devi BV having scored 18 goals emerged champions and
Pushpadana Girls College with 15 goals in the tournament finished runner
up.
Both teams had a clean record with no goals being scored against
them. St. Anthony's Girls College who proved to be touch opponents in
the tournament finished third. |
