Swimmer Heshan fails to make an impact
Chinthana Wasala in Singapore
Heshan Unamboowe, Sri Lanka’s only competitor in yesterday’s events
in two swimming events failed to make an impact in the first rounds of
boys 50m Backstroke and 100m Free Style events at the inaugural Asian
Youth games which marks its end tomorrow in Singapore.
Unamboowe was disqualified in the second heat of Boys 50m Backstroke
event and did not face the starter in the 100m free-style event at the
Singapore Sports School swimming complex.
That marked the end of any hopes of Sri Lanka gaining any kind of
advancement in the medal tally and the Lankan contingent will have to
return with only the three medals they achieved in athletics two days
ago in sprint events.
The beach volleyball events in which Sri Lanka had high hopes, saw
the end with Thailand dominating, and winning both categories boys and
girls finals, both met Kazakhstan in their respective finals. Both teams
took over their opponents easily and beat them in style, 2-0 at the
beautiful Siloso Beach, Sentosa Island yesterday.
By yesterday, most of the athletes had left the AYG village for their
respective countries and the games looked a bit dizzy and only the
Swimming events were successful in attracting a fair amount of a crowd.
The two football semi-finals held on Saturday and North Korea and
South Korea made it to the final which is scheduled for this evening at
the Jalan Besar stadium.
Although the games did not see a large crowd attendance in general,
the football final is expected to attract a big crowed.
China bagged most of the gold medals and extended their lead to 21
golds, eight silvers and six bronze medals. South Korea is in the second
slot with 13 golds, 11 silvers and 12 bronze medals.
Thailand advanced to the third position with seven golds, five
silvers and one bronze medal. |
