BASL condoles death of Minister Dodangoda
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka condoles the death of Amarasiri
Dodangoda, Minister of Justice and Law Reforms, Attorney-at-Law and a
senior politician of this country.
The Bar Association extends its deepest sympathies to Mrs. Dodangoda,
Attorney-at-Law and family.
UGC to release cut-off marks
The cut-off marks for university admissions for this year will be
released soon, University Grants Commission said.
The UGC hopes to admit a minimum of 20,000 students to 14
universities in the country this time.
Arrangements have been made to commence studies at all the
universities concurrently from this year.
New website
The British High Commission announced the launch of its Virtual
Embassy website in the Maldives. The website, ukinmaldives.fco.gov.uk
was launched by President Mohamed Nasheed in the Maldives yesterday.
The High Commissioner to Maldives is based in Colombo.
Uva PC elections:
JVP appoints committee for nominations
People's Liberation Front (JVP) has appointed a committee to prepare
the list of candidates seeking nomination for the upcoming Uva
Provincial Council election.
This committee includes its propaganda secretary Vijitha Herath,
Political Bureau members Chandrasena Wijesinghe MP, and Parliamentarian
Samantha Widyaratne.
Remanded for possessing ganja
ANANDA PATHIRAJA North Central corr.
Puttalam Magistrate remanded a suspect who was nabbed with 4 kilos of
ganja in his possession till June 3.
This suspect is identified as Ratnayake Mudiyanselage Dharmasena
(62), a father of three, from Gambirigaswewa, Ihalapuliyankulama.
The suspect was nabbed with the ganja plants at a location at the
Gambirigaswewa forest reserve by a team of policemen from Saliyawewa
police.
Militants kidnap 300 in Pakistan
Taliban militants kidnapped about 300 students, teachers and their
relatives travelling in a convoy of mini-buses in Pakistan’s restive
northwestern region on Monday, police said.
“Driver of one of the vehicles managed to escape and students
reported to us that their colleagues have been kidnapped by Taliban,”
Razaq Khan, a police official in Bakka Kheil village told Reuters.

SAARC meeting
The third meeting of the SAARC Working Group on Biotechnology will be
held on June 4-5, 2009 at Hotel Galadari, Colombo. Science and
Technology Minister Prof. Tissa Vitarana will attend the Inauguration at
9.15 a.m. on June 4, in addition to the delegates from eight SAARC
countries and the SAARC Secretariat.
