ASEAM to fight global crisis

Vietnam: Vietnam called for action over words at the Asia-Europe Ministerial Meeting (ASEAM), regarding the current challenges of the global crisis, climate change, disease and energy security.

In his address at the opening of the meeting with 45 foreign ministers, Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung reminded that the threat affects over 6.7 billion human beings and future generations.

Dung, who recalled that the ASEAM stands for nearly half the world’s GDP and 60 percent of world trade, also called to build a sustainable economic system and strive to revive the world economy.

The ASEAM is made up of 16 countries of Asia and 27 from Europe, in the Secretary of the Association of South East Asia Nations (ASEAN) and the European Commission.

The ministers suggested granting Russia and Australia full membership and proposed discussing the situation on the Korean Peninsula, said Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Gia Kiem.
