Injunction on UNP Leader against suspension

Colombo District Judge Sampath Wijeratne yesterday issued notice of interim injunction on United National Party and its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe against the suspending of the party membership of UNP members of the Galewela Pradeshiya Sabha and leader Meddage Ariyasinghe, from the UNP.

The Court issued the order after plaintiff Ariyasinghe filed a plaint before the Court alleging that the suspension of his party membership from the UNP without any inquiry was illegal.

The member filed the plaint citing UNP, its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, its General Secretary Tissa Attanayake and 92 others of the UNP as defendants.

The plaintiff stated that he obtained the UNP party membership in 1976 and was elected to the Galewela Pradeshiya Sabha in 2002 and 2006.

Later he joined the Government in 2008.

Later the UNP had held an ex-parte inquiry and informed him that his party membership was suspended through a letter dated March 18, 2009 by the General Secretary of UNP.
