Japan gives additional US$ 1.4 m for demining
The Japanese Government will provide an additional grant of US$ 1.4
million (Rs. 160 million) for humanitarian demining activities in Jaffna,
Killinochchi and Vavuniya through the DDG (Danish Demining Group) and
the HALO Trust.
Japan has already provided a grant aid of US$ 700,000 (Rs. 80
million) for humanitarian demining in Mannar through the FSD (Swiss
Foundation for Mine Action). Japan’s contribution for demining
activities in the North reaches US$ 2.1 million (Rs. 240 million), the
Japanese Embassy said.
Japan has been continuously assisting the Sri Lankan Government in
their efforts to achieve a ‘Mine Free Sri Lanka’ and to accelerate early
resettlement of IDPs since 2003 and has provided US$ 19 million (Rs.
2,250 million) in total todate.
Japan hopes that the assistance for humanitarian demining will
contribute to the early return and resetlement of the Internally
Displaced Persons and enhance peace in Sri Lanka.
