Lankan jailed for fatal crash in Doha
A Doha court has sentenced a Sri Lankan trailer driver to one year's
imprisonment after finding him responsible for a road accident that
claimed the lives of four Omani men.
The court also fined him QR10,000 and suspended his driving licence
for three months. According to court sources, 12 camels also died in the
accident.
The families of the Omanis and the owner of the camels can file a
civil case to claim compensation, a court source said.
The fatal accident took place on April 14 last year in the Rawdat
Rashed area. The 33-year-old Sri Lankan told the authorities that he
found a trailer some 10 metres ahead of him slowing down and tried to
use the brakes "but surprisingly, I found that they were not working."
To avoid ramming the vehicle in front, the Sri Lankan swerved left,
hitting an Emirati registered vehicle, driven by an Omani and carrying
three of his compatriots.
While three of the victims (aged 18, 24 and 19) died on the spot, the
fourth, 22, succumbed to his wounds a few months later. - Gulf Times
